To my Dutch friends:

If any of you, or if any of your friends, wishes to adopt a name on the MIA wall, I have one.

Pfc. William (Sonny) Simon was killed on Nov. 5, 1944, while serving with the 109th Infantry Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division. I assume he was in the Hurtgen Forest attack, because the 28th was mauled in that attack, and books have been written about how the battle never should have happened.

Simon has a VFW post named after him in Middleton, Wis., a few miles from where I grew up. His photo certainly is there and I would think the post probably knows where surviving family is.

I will pursue this once I know he has been adopted.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Presidential Unit Citation and Oak Leaf Cluster. The van der Heides visit his grave a couple of times a year to decorate it beautifully with flowers she arranges. One of my nephews has had the opportunity to meet and be entertained by the family and taken to see the grave. My husband and I were in the Netherlands in the 1980's and saw the cemetery and my brother's grave then. It is such a beautiful memorial to our soldiers. I want to thank all those who adopt a grave.
